Our bodies possess a vast array of systems that are designed to work harmoniously with one another.  In fact, there are 12 systems in the human body for example the CNS (central nervous system), cardiovascular system and the digestive system just to name a few.

But interestingly, science has discovered that we contain another fascinating system called the Endocannabinoid (ECS) system that governs many important health processes such as mental health, cortisol modulation and immune function.

The Endocannabinoid system was discovered in 1992, at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, by Dr. Lumir Hanus along with American researcher Dr. William Devane.  They discovered the endocannabinoid anandamide which is one of 2 major neurotransmitters that affect our mental and physical well being.  The other important neurotransmitter is 2AG(2-Arachidonoylglycerol) which is another endocannabinoid that binds to various receptor sites on multiple cells throughout our body to elicit their therapeutic effects in our systems.

This is our internal endocannabinoid system which is one of the most important systems in the human body, comprising this network of neurotransmitters that control a wide range of biological functions.

The endocannabinoid system regulates our response to stress, pain, and fear, but it also controls such processes as memory, body temperature, cognitive performance, and immune function.

The ECS maintains the chemical balance in the body and whenever that balance falls out of whack, it starts releasing its own molecules within the human body(endocannabinoids) to restore homeostasis or harmony.

Along with our bodies' unique ability to produce and balance this delicate ECS, we can increase the amounts of these available internal neurotransmitters by supplementing or providing outside(exogenous) sources.

There is a huge buzz on the streets currently regarding both medicinal cannabis and recreational cannabis.  This is due to the fact of the plant's ability to increase or supplement naturally occurring cannabinoids to further nourish the endocannabinoid system.   Cannabinoids have been heavily researched and have a long list of benefits to our mental and physical health, some of which include, depression, anxiety, PTSD, insomnia, epilepsy, chronic pain, arthritis and enhancing immunity.

Endocannabinoids can be found in the cannabis plant in the form of CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetra hydro cannabinoids) which each have therapeutic merit to address health issues.  Although THC has benefits for managing chronic pain etc.  it does come with psychoactive side effects and users must be mindful of this when selecting varieties.

CBD is the non psychoactive form and has a vast array of mental and physical health benefits in and of itself.   Hemp, or industrial hemp, is a variety of the Cannabis sativa plant and has shown remarkable health benefits for multiple conditions.
